Whether you're adding a featured image to a blog post or embedding a video in your content, the Media tab is where you'll store and organize these files.
Uploading Files to the Media Tab
Uploading files to the Media tab is straightforward, and you have a couple of options:
From the Dashboard:
Navigate to the Media tab in your WordPress dashboard.
Click the Add New button.
Select files from your computer or drag and drop them directly into the upload area.
While Editing a Post or Page:
In the block editor, click the + icon to add a new block.
Choose the appropriate block for your file type (e.g., Image for photos, File for PDFs).
Upload the file directly from there.
Managing Uploaded Files
Once your files are uploaded, you can manage them in the Media Library:
Edit Details: Update the file’s title, caption, and alt text. Alt text is crucial for images as it improves accessibility and SEO by describing the image to screen readers and search engines.
Organize: Use folders or tags to keep your media library tidy, making it easier to find specific files later.
Best Practices for Each File Type
Images:
Optimize them first by resizing to the appropriate dimensions and compressing to reduce file size. This helps your site load faster.
Videos:
Consider hosting videos on external platforms like YouTube or Vimeo and embedding them on your site. This saves bandwidth and storage space on your server.
PDFs:
Upload directly and link to them from your content. Ensure they’re properly formatted and not too large to avoid slow download times for visitors.
By following these steps and tips, you’ll keep your Media tab organized and your website running smoothly!
